About Us

What is the Mercenaries Guild?

The Mercenaries Guild is a loosely-organized collection of like-minded individuals who focus on teaching new players, developing Tremulous, and having a good amount of fun in the process. We are not what some might consider a “skill clan”, or even a true gaming “clan” at all—our requirements for entry are not based on a recruit's skill, but on their helpfulness and behavior. As such, anyone has the chance to join the MG family, whether you're a new player, willing to learn, or a seasoned veteran who is looking for something new.

"You don't have to be a master to teach or to learn. Even the most experienced players can learn from each other". -- PIE, MG Founding member.

The Mercenaries Guild is made up of a wide variety of individuals, including normal players who just want to have fun, coders working on the Next Big Release of Tremulous, modders, mappers, modelers, texture artists, clog dancers, hot dog vendors, IT technicians, and unemployed teenagers living in their parent's basement with ten computers and a highspeed internet connection (Or so some of us wish).

So you're not a game clan. What do you do?

The Mercenaries Guild generally focuses on three goals: Teaching new players the basics of the game in a friendly environment, developing the next version of Tremulous, and generally having a good amount of fun while doing so. Howerver, this doesn't mean we're a bunch of hermits avoiding Tremulous matches—to the contrary! The MG team is responsible for hosting the extremely solid and friendly Pure Tremulous servers, and all of us enjoy a good game when they arise. It is not uncommon to see shouts of “Game up on PT!!” in the IRC channels, followed by a mass exodus as everyone joins the fun on the servers. In fact, the Mercenaries Guild even organizes completely voluntary teams for clan ladders and other competitions. Scrim games are played occasionally, though attendance is optional.

What else do you do?

One of the strengths of the Mercenaries Guild is our diversity in activities. We have very few activities with compulsory requirements for Guild membership, and so many of our members help in their own ways. Some of the MG members create artwork—posters, desktops, textures for use in-game, models, and other Tremulous paraphernalia. Other members help out by writing—information pages on the MG website, advertisements, the Read The Fine Manual project, even Tremulous-related literature. Still others are working on the Tremulous Demo Project, which aims to provide downloadable video tutorials displaying the basics of Tremulous gameplay to new players.

What else does your Guild have to offer?

The Mercenaries Guild:

  • Has some of the most kind and friendly players.
  • Is constantly active with Tremulous-related projects, including Tremulous 1.2, maps, modificatons, textures, and literature.
  • Focuses on teaching new players, learning from one another, and having quite a bit of fun doing so.
    "I play for fun" --[LLJK]What?
  • Has a philosophy
  • Has its own servers: PureTremulous and the MG Development Servers
  • Is a strong brotherhood of individuals; we help each other out with our projects as much as possible.

Do you allow Multi-clanning?

The simple answer is: Yes, Multi-clanning is no problem. The longer answer is slightly more complicated: we feel that, due to the fact that MG is not a skill based clan, our members are able to participate in more rigidly constructed clans that focus on gameplay, if they so wish. So long as the clan you are in/are planning on joining does not mind that you are a part of the Mercenaries Guild, players are able to be involved with as many clans as they would like. The Mercenaries Guild is more akin to a loose family organization than a binding obligation to show up at a game on command. As with most aspects of the Mercenaries Guild, wearing the }MG{ Mercenaries Guild Member tag in-game is completely optional. Being a part of the Mercenaries Guild runs deeper than winning tournaments and flying a red }MG{ tag.
