Practice Your DretchPosted by seFFYLIGht in Untagged |

I know you're thinking "well, that goes without saying", but I don't just mean practicing your headbites. Getting in and going for the head is only a small part of dretching. Hell, the dretch is already designed to be perfectly equipped to do that. Darting into a group of humans and taking down one before you go is about the same as randomly spamming your rifle down a hallway at a bunch of dretches. You wouldn't do that, would you? Like everything important in the world, the right equipment can be provided -- it's how you use it that counts; and when it comes to the dretch, it's all about the movement, baby.
There are a few things to remember while playing a dretch:
- Aim for the head. Always.
- Travel on walls and ceilings when closing to attack range.
- Remember the saying "Nature abhors a straight line". Though it's usual meaning doesn't fit here, maybe it'll help remind you to never travel in a line towards your enemy, unless they are a S1 human, and don't know you're behind them.
- Ground headbites are satisfying, wall and ceiling headbites doubly so.
- The dretch is not a tank, nor is it a suicide bomber. Do not rush those blue dots. Learn your maps. Learns the holes, learn the indentations, the vents, even the ceilings and the possibility to hide behind a rafter. Against S1 humans, utilizing these will allow you to wait for your prey, which is what you should do. Wait until the human leaves his base before you attack. A group of three to four humans can be utterly obliterated by a single dretch that gets the drop on them away from their base.
- After your team gets S2, keep your poison on. Constantly. If you run out, head back to the booster for more. Poison vs. a naked human is as good as insta-death, poison against S2 and S3 humans is the only thing a dretch is essentially good for. Getting in, dropping some poison, and getting out. Most humans will use their medpacks the instance they get poisoned. This leaves them away from their base without a medpack, which means they're lunchmeat if they meet anything bigger than a marauder.
- The best thing you can do is learn your bite range. You don't have to touch your enemy to score a hit, and can in fact do some hefty damage from quite a decent distance away.
What you need to practice is getting the drop on a group of two to three humans, avoiding them within melee range -- don't worry about hits right now -- for five to ten seconds, and then getting away alive. At first, against decent humans, this will seem nearly impossible. Learn your maps. Pick your battleground. Know your escape route beforehand. Once you can do this every time, begin to try the same thing while aiming for the head.
I survived for ten minutes as a lone dretch today on Karith, against eight S3 humans, and even took one out before timelimit was hit. This was after a game on Niveus where I scored 17 unanswered kills as a dretch against S1 humans within 3 minutes. The dretch is a subtle weapon of potent destruction. To anyone that hasn't yet learned to utilize it to it's full advantage, I suggest that you stop practicing your headbites, and start practicing your dretch.
