Title: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on June 01, 2008, 09:11:14 AM Hi everyone, I'm just a 13 year old kid (I turn 14 in July) so bear that in mind and please make allowances for my grammar/spelling and my bland writing. That said, I'll give you some info about me. My first experience with computers dates back to 2001, when me and by brother got a computer as a joint birthday present. I knew very little about computers then. To illustrate how bad I was, I thought that the monitor was the computer! this was excusable as I was only 5 years old, but I'm still a little ashamed now. Anyway, I played a game that resembled doom a little, and that lead to my love of games. I was *really* hooked at around 11, getting an xbox from micro$oft and playing a lot of games. I was a game junkie at age 12 and that's when dad threw out the xbox. he told me to play computer games instead, and bought me my dated GeFORCE 6200 so I could play games at a faster framerate than 10 fps. anyway, I played quake 3 rather obsessively after that, and honed skills such as strafe jumping, plasma jumping, and sniping with the railgun. My dad installed mandrake then and I found myself playing games like supertux, not knowing there were native linux clients. nothing much happened until my 13th birthday. I had learned a great deal more about computers and Knew of the ioquake 3 based games which, of course, brought me to tremulous. I was first drawn to the human team, being used to guns. In fact, I've only started to use the aliens more in the last few weeks. well, that brings me here I guess. I have an interest in modding, and have gtkradiant installed, but I'm still learning how to use it.
I want to join this nice people's society because I feel that it would enhance my experience and maybe I'd make a few friends and learn some things along the way. I often just sort the servers by players, although you will often find me on atcs wonderland, because my real life friend plays in that server. If you've read this far then you must be feeling homicidal. sorry =p ps. if you see this, munroe, please tell me if my application is okay or not. Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: Rocinante on June 01, 2008, 10:31:44 AM What??!? You have friends in real life? This is unacceptable. :P
Thanks for the application, I'll throw in my usual suggestions. Wear the }MGR{ tag so that other guild members can find you in game - one of our requirements, and the reason for the month-long wait, is that we get to know you before making a decision. Well, before making a positive decision, there's been some times where negative decisions were made because nobody knows who the recruit is. More importantly from my aspect is the fact that we also like to know people outside of Tremulous, so find yourself an IRC client (since you mentioned Mandrake, I'll assume you still use that for your main computer; in that case, X-Chat is a good choice, or if you want to go minimalist and yet still feature rich then fire up irssi and you can run it under screen and reattach anytime without leaving the window open all the time) and join us on chat.freenode.net channel #mercenariesguild. We usually keep the chatter in there at a level that most parents won't find offensive, certainly not as bad as you'll find in the public chat on most multiplayer games :> Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on June 01, 2008, 11:39:57 AM will do, thanks for the warm reception =]

Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on June 01, 2008, 01:05:11 PM fixed =] edit your post, to 'you're cool' and cover up for me saying clan. it'll be a huge cover up! *cue diabolical laughter*
Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: Garoth on June 01, 2008, 04:59:01 PM Also, if possible, try to encourage your friends to play on our servers -- we run the Pure Tremulous servers. Please try to come on them as much as you can as that is where you will find us. Also, we think that they're some of the best servers in general, so they are probably worth playing. The community there is very nice too.
Speaking of which, perhaps come by puretremulous.com sometime to chat with the other people who play there. Have a good day. Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on July 01, 2008, 11:08:46 AM I'm adding some other interests that aren't really meant to be in the application:
I like to read, mainly sci-fi and some comedys, and my favorite authors are (in no particular order) Eric Blair(aka George Orwell) Douglas Adams, J.R.R Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien, Aldous Huxley and to a lesser extent Charles Dickens. My favorite television show is monty python's flying circus and my favorite python is Eric Idle. I like music, but that really depends on what I'm listening to. I can't stand rap, I just can't. I like pink floyd with syd, but I think Roger Waters is a sellout. I also liked hendrix, and still like the Dead Kennedys with jello in. That's about it really. Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: SilverFox on July 01, 2008, 06:05:53 PM All good tastes. Are you from the UK?
I dig Aldous Huxley too. I like books written some time ago about the 'future' which has since come to pass in reality. Its interesting to see things the author imagined the future would be like, often in a exaggerated tone, which have actually become common place. The state of the institutions of family and marriage for instance. I think we're less than a decade away from marriages moving from 'till death do us part' to a '3 year contracted civil union' How long until we start planning children in labs, and doing away with mom+dad altogether? Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: evets@ubuntu on July 01, 2008, 09:14:34 PM Aldus Huxley's "A Brave New World" is the book where he describes this horrific vision of the future. It is certainly a science fiction classic, and I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in sci-fi. It one of those classics that everyone should read. In fact, I have in sitting on my shelf next to "I, robot" and "Stranger in a Strange Land." What's frightening is how you are reading along thinking "yeah right, like it's ever going to get that bad, but then you turn the page, and all of a sudden he's describing something that has already come to pass. It's almost creepy and at times is very prophetic on our current situation and where we're heading.
Oh by the way, I'm a big fan of sci-fi too. :D in case you hadn't figured that out yet... Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on July 02, 2008, 06:30:34 AM yeah, I like brave new world, although I think 1984 comes close to rivaling it. 1984 seems almost prophetic, with the way things are going, and brave new world isn't far off the mark either, with all this talk of artificial humans with inferior intelligence etc.
Yes, I'm from the uk. Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: rant-repellant on July 02, 2008, 09:37:52 AM checklist of likeabilty:
likes sci fi: Check liikes george orwell: check is in the MGR club: check likes xbox: check has no friends: che.... what!!!! meh still check and my complimentry :Flamer: for you joining the club Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on July 05, 2008, 06:23:59 PM Oops, I HATE xboxes now. You'd sooner catch me praising George Bush's English than using a
Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: angus on July 05, 2008, 07:39:42 PM Alright...
But you still use Windows, correct? Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: Garoth on July 06, 2008, 01:47:20 AM I have my doubts, to be honest. He seems to think lowly of them, and his avatar seems to allude that Microsoft has something to do with Nazis.
(Which... I suppose would be fair considering that a lot of people seem to see Open Source as communism... which it kind of is) Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: angus on July 06, 2008, 06:45:17 AM I hate it when people just can't admit that Windows is just an all-round better OS, especially for gamers.
They might be a big, evil company, and Vista may suck (Though XP is good), but they have the gaming industry wrapped around their finger. I'd just lose too much for switching to Linux. Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: Raytray on July 06, 2008, 07:57:31 AM Ohgodnotanotheroswar.
I don't see how all-round better = especially for gamers btw. I would have assumed all-round better = better for everyone? Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on July 06, 2008, 10:53:02 AM no, I use linux. I've got ubuntu installed on this computer, and debian on another one. I avoid using microsoft products when I can, but at school you have to.
Posted on: July 06, 2008, 04:51:04 PM umm... should I get rid of my avatar? It seems to be rather inflammatory. Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: Garoth on July 06, 2008, 07:02:03 PM Angus, don't go there.
Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: angus on July 07, 2008, 07:43:28 AM Ahh.. OK.
I'm too fond of arguments for my own good. I'll leave it at that. One last parting shot, though. Ever tried running Assassin's Creed on Linux? Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: SilverFox on July 07, 2008, 08:49:31 AM I have my doubts, to be honest. He seems to think lowly of them, and his avatar seems to allude that Microsoft has something to do with Nazis. Ack!! I didn't even notice that. I saw the avatar, but thought it was supposed to be a windows symbol disintegrating, but it didn't complete. Vortex, don't change your avatar unless you like. Its no 'inflammatory', just something to talk about, I guess. As far as that goes, I think Gates gets the short end of the stick. He's a huge philanthropist, who is not self promoting (in that regard), and has done a lot of good. I think people just hate and his company on him because he's successful. As far as windows goes... If you don't like it, don't use it. Rather simple. People who get all emotional over any piece of software are rather silly (unless they have contributed to it, then thats different) Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: Garoth on July 07, 2008, 11:15:32 AM Again, lets not go there -- this time aimed at Silver.
Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on July 07, 2008, 01:11:36 PM the avatar was intended to be slightly humorous, but it seems that people misinterpret it, so I think it'll be best to remove it,
silver, I do agree, It's most pathetic to get emotional about software (or hardware for that matter) and I see people on youtube wishing xbox owners death, and xbox owners wishing ps3 death. Fanboyism is always silly, although I'm a bit of a linux fanboy :P Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: angus on July 07, 2008, 08:46:32 PM Heh, I just love software debates. They're always fun.
Just don't get too involved, and you'll be fine. Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on July 12, 2008, 09:50:05 AM well, I wouldn't know if assassin's creed would work natively on linux, seeing as I don't meet ac's retardedly high hardware requirements.
but from what I do know, one can play it under a windows emulator, just as you can play call of duty 4 on linux under wine. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jppZCA-BoXo ) Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: angus on July 18, 2008, 01:43:49 AM True enough, I guess.
But WINE is only half compatible, after all. Virtual PCs are the most likely candidates. Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on July 18, 2008, 10:50:57 AM Indeed, wine is not perfect in any regard. I agree, windows is a better gaming platform, but only because publishers except a select few (epic, id, the latter of which created the very engine tremulous uses, ironically using Linux) publish for Linux. In fact, native Linux clients yielded better results than their windows counterparts.
Never mind that, I've bought a new machine and put all the components in it. (amd athlon 64 x2 3800+, 2 GiB of ram, GeFORCE 8800gt, and a 720 GiB hard drive, which isn't gonna fill up any time soon.) Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: angus on July 20, 2008, 02:49:46 AM Yes. I agree too. But I stand by what I said before. By switching to Linux, I'll lose too much.
Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: deathonice on July 20, 2008, 03:01:03 AM 720 GiB hard drive, which isn't gonna fill up any time soon. I have 1tb in total (across 3 drives) and I have a total of 60gb or so free.Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on July 20, 2008, 06:01:01 PM holy.... how did you fill that up? video editing? on my mac mini it only had a 20 GiB hard drive and I managed okay-ish.
I guess I'm so used to deleting stuff and being a memory space freak. Frankly, I'm a little annoyed that an amd athlon 64 bit 2 ghz dual core processor didn't make much difference from my ancient sempron 2600+ (1.5 ghz) other than that, I'm quite pleased with my new computer. My dad gave me a budget of £100 (around $200 to Americans) but let's just say he got a little carried away with buying the components. Oh well, nothing like a top line PC but it gets the job done. Posted on: July 20, 2008, 12:05:07 PM Posted on: July 06, 2008, 04:51:04 PM umm... should I get rid of my avatar? It seems to be rather inflammatory. Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: angus on July 21, 2008, 03:56:41 AM I like it. Better than what I can do, after all.
Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on July 23, 2008, 06:49:14 AM please may I be added to the rec board?

Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: SilverFox on July 23, 2008, 05:51:09 PM Yes, when someone notices. Is the implication that you (Garoth) are nobody? Friend, you are somebody. Someone special. Don't be so down in the mouth, eh? Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: v0rt3x on July 24, 2008, 02:07:38 PM I am withdrawing my application, as I feel neither wanted or needed. I am not, however, going to stop frequenting this site and perhaps talk in irc, unless you guys have any problem with that. I may apply at a later time, but I think I trod on quite a few people's toes. I guess I saw this coming, and I'm not up for all this. I really have nothing to contribute, except a sardonic comment now and then, and I don't really think I'm '}MG{ material'. To get into this 'freeform clan of sorts' you really have to have something to show for the fact that you're a mercenaries guild member, perhaps code, perhaps art, server administration etc. etc. I really did like talking to the devs, although not in a sycophantic manner.
well, It was fun, bye... ...for now. *vanishes in a puff of smoke* Title: Re: v0rt3x's application. Post by: Garoth on July 24, 2008, 03:09:38 PM Yes, when someone notices. Of course, now that is not required. See you around V0rt3x. Title: Re: v0rt3x's application.
