Howdy y'all

So I've slowly started playing other games and like with most things, get more enjoyment out of them playing with friends.

Proposal:

Every two weeks or so we rotate to playing a new secondary game with our MG-MGr buddies. This just means that when all the PT servers are empty, or you are not in the mood for tremulous, or whatever reason your first alternate choice should be the secondary game assigned at that time. Playing with you guys is fun, and I want to do it more, and in other games.

Game requirements: Free, Cross platform (linux/win (nobody cares about macs)).
The ability to run our own server easily and being open source is a plus.

We've been playing warsow a lot lately (or at least the few of us in IRC have) so I'll put that on the list, but not to begin with.

Digital Paint

A quake2 based standalone game. Basically paintball, can be lots of fun with a lot of strategy around CTF. TONS of maps. I suggest this one to be our first game.

Another q2 based stand alone game. Fast paced FPS with a focus on movement. Server is running on the lolcat and we play all the time.

Armagetron Advanced

3d Tron cycle game. Server is running on lolcat, we used to play this back in the day and it was lots of fun. (goooooooo double binds).

BZflag

3D tank battle game. I know some of you have played this before.. I never 'got' it.

RTS where you dont have to do everything manually, playing over net can be lots of fun, does not require a server.

Open source civilization. I fail so hard at this game it's not even funny.

Q3 based game. If the funky artwork, excellent maps, and 3D breasts don't get you - my punchy will.


There are tons more, and if this picks up I'm sure y'all know more than me as I'm the newbie gamer of the lot. So what do you guys think? An easy way for }MG{ to branch-out to other games and we all know "variety is the spice of life"

Good idea. Ive been busy with school lately but highlight me on irc when you are getting a game together.

Why stop there maybe you should extend into other consoles.

Many of us (me) don't have any consoles. We do all have computers.

I've played all of those games at one point or another, and think it'd be a lot of fun to get back into them on an on-and-off basis with the rest of you guys.

Add spring to the list and maybe gloom and nexuiz. Great idea Khalsa.

My only complaint is that FreeCiv is so damn hard to learn and each game takes so damn long. I'm not sure we'd even figure all of it out in the two week limit :P

As much as I enjoy playing FreeCiv, games can take hours/days at a time depending on the settings. And it's not like you can just jump into a game with other people at any time, so I'm not really sure it'd be a good choice for this type of thing.

I used to play Crossfire with some friends, and that was something that I really liked. It's a really neat mix of Gauntlet, Nethack, and the MMORPG genre in general.

I've been on a little break from trem lately, been playing Urban Terror and Open Arena a bit. Just released a spankin' new map for UrbanTerror, too  :D

Is Urban Terror completely free now, or does it require some game. Does it run Linux?

It's standalone and runs on windows/linux/mac, though I have never been much of a fan of it.

Can't be too bad. I remember thinking it was cool a couple years back.

Urban Terror is good if you're a counterstrke fan.  I tasted it and spit it back out.

true combat elite isn't stand alone but still fun.
urban terror is fun to watch for me. (fire plays it)
TA: Springs is also fun depending on the mods/map you play.

I couldn't really get into freeciv, but I did play Civ3 by sid miers or whatever, and that was fun. Paintball was alright but I came back to trem after a week or so.

We could play tremx for the heck of it.

Well, it seems the current 'fav', Paintball, isn't available for Macs.  Or if it is their client is hidden very well.  But I started thinking about this, why is it that I haven't been joining into Tremulous when I get a moment, but if Khalsa says "Hey we're playing Warsow come on in" I fire up the client?

It's because people other than you guys suck.

Anyway.. back to gathering motivation to get some housework done today.  So far I've been 100% successful at failing to do that :>

I'm a big fan of Padman, personally.  Love the gameplay as a break from the strategy of Tremulous.  Oh and hi, MG forum noob here.  *waves*

TA: Spring is nice, as is Scorched 3D.  I recommend adding at least one of those in for RTS fun.

Well, Paintball was fun for a bit, but I'm pretty much over it entirely now. Are you going to be picking another game to try out together soon, Khalsa?

FreeCiv is Free Civilization 2. They're onto Civilization 4, complete with gorgeous graphics and near-epic system requirements ;)

Civilization 3 isn't multiplayer without the Play The World expansion, so that pretty much rules it out, even though it's probably dirt-cheap by now.

CIV4 is the most awesome game ever.
Works fine with wine too.

Only problem is it takes all week.

I think "free" is a criteria though.

Anyone ever played secrets of mana on the snes? Well, this game is kinda like that, only in MMO style.

Basically, it's all realtime, it requires timing, skill and brains.
You play through episodes, all cut down in multiple stages (maps) that you need to complete.
 The story is so so, evil dark lord blablabla, it's interesting enough to keep your attention but it's nothing big.
I'm having a hard time trying to explain it, just watch the vid and you'll know wether you could like it or not.

ps: The community sucks there, so it would be nice to talk to some players who know more then the following words: Idiot, noob, lol, etc (no, this usually wasn't aimed at me :P).

Lunia looks like a wonderful game. I'll have to download it sometime. Battle for Wesnoth is for All OS's and free, is it not?
Lunia kind of reminds me of Tales Of Symphonia, for an unknown reason. (I think there is a sequel for that game coming out :D)

Welcome to the forums, Shadowgandor. Feel free to recommend any games, most other FPS's suck anyway :)

Heresy to the sacred genre will be punishable by ownage! :P
RTSs are nice too, if we can find a decent free one. Starcraft is always fun, though not free.
