Boo, play your own background music.
That, my friend, is just like saying
"Build your own Lucifer Cannon out of these leftover parts"
The title sequence was chosen for a reason, you know.
What? That makes no sense! Also, how can you
not play your own background music? I always have music playing

Agreed. Bad analogy. And yes, from my experience in open source development, it probably was chosen because one of:
1) Someone someone knew was sort of okay at music and they felt like that person should do it. It being a short loop.
2) They couldn't find anything better and someone not really qualified slapped something together. Music / sound effects for OSS games don't come around too too much.
What I can be pretty sure of, though, is that it was not "chosen for a reason" -- it most certainly was something that they had on hand, could use freely, and was "pretty good." Well, I mean, unless they chose it for the reasons that it was on hand and pretty good.
I for one do not miss it, and it interferes with playing your own background music -- which is not only nothing alike to building a lucifer cannon, but also is customized to your tastes.
As a side note, it seems the developers were considerably more focussed on making the actual game. The title screen / menus / server browser leave a lot to be desired. I agree completely with their decision.
