... you could give the characters some kind of common phrase that they like to use ...

Such as Grok!

I'm half way through this book (Stranger in a Strange Land), and its one of the best sci-fi novels I've read in quite a while.  Definately recommend it if you haven't read it yet (even if you don't like Sci-Fi)

I have not read that book.

I do know grok.

I have read another great geek tome, "The New Hacker's Dictionary".  It has a definition for grok.
