My name is Amanieu, I am 15 years old.
I have been playing Tremulous for 3 months, but i am already quite good.
I used to be in {GoC}, which then merged with [N] to become [NoC] but then everyone left and the clan died because the leader was an asshole.  So now I just joined [SK] because some other people from the clan joined too.
I want to join MG because I would like to be part of a stable community to which I can contribute.
I know how to program in C, C++, Visual Basic and assembly.  I have already created a patch for Tremulous which I am still testing.
The patch allows argument to be passed to a script as cvars, and also allow cvars to be used in the command line.  I will put my patch on the patch tracker very soon.  I hope that I will be able to contribute even more to the development of Tremulous when I join MG.
I usually play on SST, Dretch*Storm and Dretch*Tsunami.
I live in China so I have such a high ping that i can't get into the PureTremulous servers.  My lowest ping is 200 for SST.

A really good way to get in besides just posting an application is to be known. In other words, hang out with us every chance you get, I'm not saying that you should not play on sst and only play with us. But I am saying things like, be active on these forums, hang out with us on irc and things like that.

No, no. You are saying that he shouldn't play on SST. No one should play on SST.

Until you give me a very good reason for me not to play on SST (a neg rec perhaps), I will just continue to play on it because it is the server on which I have *the* lowest ping.  I will play on PureTremulous when I make a patch which allows members to bypass g_maxPing (shouldn't be too hard).

About me:
I'm 15, I am French but have lived in Beijing, China for 11 years.  My primary interest is computers, so I do a lot of programming.  [I'm even making my own operating system :-), but I stopped working on it for a few months :-( ] I am also interested in quantum physics.  In my free time I don't really do much apart from homework, Tremulous and programming.  I am a free software fan, but I use Windows, because I am having some trouble with my video driver (which I can't fix because it is closed source, stupid nVidia).

Under what OS are you having trouble with an nVidia card?  I've found their Linux drivers to mostly work, though sometimes requiring a bit of hand-holding to get them started (had one issue where if I loaded a newer kernel, the machine would lock up when X was run using the driver).  I've on occasion played Trem on my desktop at work, which is Fedora 5 w/ the nVidia driver - though I couldn't tell you which card is in there honestly.

I dual boot Windows XP with Gentoo Linux 2007. 0 on a Core 2 Duo laptop with 2GB of RAM and an nVidia 7200 Go GPU.  Looking at the nVidia Linux forums, I found out that many people have the same problem, but none of the proposed fixes worked for me.

I'm impressed that you're only 15.

Reason not to play on SST:

It's bad for your skill. It's a crowded server where most of the players are really bad. On a crowded server, kills tend to be spamming your weapon/alien. Your aim becomes sloppy. Few good players play on large servers, meaning you rarely have to elevate yourself to beat anyone. On some smaller servers where mostly good players play, you'll find yourself trying to work with SST tactics -- building all over the place due to huge amounts of build points, spamming to kill, running out to get some quick kills, and you'll find...

1) You suck at building: with fewer resources, you don't know what to do. You don't know how to position things optimally because you're used to the "place-stuff-until-you-have-a-defense" strategy.
2) You can't spam: friendly fire is often on
3) You're the quick kill -- everyone on is better than you.

I'm sure some of my fellow members have more to say about this than I do. In short, though, the best way to become a strong player is to play with other good players. You can't tell me Anger/Norf/Jabberwock became who he is today by spamming his lucy on SST.

In that case on which server should I play? (considering my ping will always be above 200 and probably above 300, which creates issuses with max pings)

You can't get on anything but SST? o_0

None of Beer Garden, Pure Tremulous, or D*S servers work (admittedly, D*S servers aren't much better than SST)? Tjws? xandu? OPP?

Well, I mean, if you can't get on, stick with SST, but I consider it a last choice.

I can get on OPP with about 200 ping, but its empty most of the time.
I can get on Beergarden with 350 - 400 ping, but then I can't play very well because of high ping.
I can get on D*S with 250 ping, but as you said its a lot like SST.
I can't get on PureTremulous because my ping is around 350 - 450.

I am in school right now so I can't check for Xanadu and tjw, but I recall having played on Xanadu before.
Whats the name of tjw's server on the server list? I can't find it.

And I also have a problem which causes my connection to lag for 1 - 2 seconds from time to time.  This is very annoying when I am trying to escape with low HP.

Actually trem. tjw. org is always empty so thats why I didn't notice it.  My ping is about 300.
And Xanadu is also empty half of the time.

It seems only BIG servers like SST and D*S attract players.
And also PureTremulous but I can't play on it.

btw I started working on a patch which will override max ping for players at a certain admin level.
Do you think this patch could go on PureTrem?

Unfortunately, that happened right around when the school year started up.  Though I'm also guilty for not idling there myself if it's empty (if you haven't guessed, or didn't know, I'm the admin of Xanadu).  But one thing I've found that helps sometimes, if a server that you can connect to is empty, hang around there for a bit.  Some people don't look at empty servers, and some that do won't bother if there's nobody there.  But once one person is there, someone else may join in, and it snowballs until the server is full.

Just that waiting can suck, although I have done that dozens of times now. I practice building, shooting targets, dretching turrets when I'm alone on a server. Sometimes, I set up funny bases with the om and rc side by side. Hm... I just thought of an idea...
