For all of the people that are still stuck in the 80's, or just love hair metal,
Who's the best 80's metal band of all time?

I'm not really into metal, so I'm only familiar with a few bands on the surface of the genre. So my pick goes to Metallica, as long as we stay in the 80's. Master of Puppets is one of my favourite songs ever, though I hate everything the band has done since the Black Album. If anyone is interested in a good laugh, rent the documentary made about them going through counseling.

Other picks go to Slayer, Pantera, and maaaaybe Motley Crue.

But I'm not stuck in the 80's. I went through most of those bands back in high school when I went through my rebellious phase. I ended up listening to Rage Against the Machine more than any other band, and I only listen to them now for nostalgic purposes.. They released an album in 1991, so maybe you can use them to vault yourself out of the 80's. I hear good things about this 'Nirvana' band too.

Word.  Everything since Black smells of sellout.  However, does Metallica classify as 'hair band' ?  The term conjures images of Kiss, Def Leopard, and Poison.  Everyone liked Kiss (if you didn't, you are just repressing your love for rocking and rolling all night, and partying every day!), and I'm afraid to admit I was a big DL fan at one time.

Of course, I really liked Bon Jovi.

I'm so ashamed.

Yeah I didn't think Metallica would apply at first, but if you look closely at his question,

it appears the hair metal preamble was just a diversion.

Metallica would be thrash (sub-category of heavy metal). The "hair metal" part wasn't a diversion, it just classifies the bands who you couldn't really tell if they were male or female until the media caught them with the opposite (or same) sex.

And yes, I've heard of Nirvana. They're pretty good. They're one of the few 90's hard rock bands I like, along with RageAgainstTheMachine, but I only listen to RATM when I'm in the mood for destruction. (i.e. after a huge ass math exam)

I didn't see Megadeath or Iron Maiden listed in there and they're definitely good.  Metallica, Pantera, Slayer are also good.  Also, go back a little further and check out some classic rock in the forms of Zepplin, Skynard (I think I just mispelled that), Black Sabbath, and maybe Kansas (wayward son is kick ass).

The funny thing about Metallica selling out.

It's not like they sold out more than anyone else... it's that they were _so against_ selling out at first. They refused to make music videos, because they said that was selling out. So eventually, when they became kind of like every other band, suddenly, they are the biggest sellouts out there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to me, it seems that Metallica selling out is a matter of perception more than them actually selling out. Maybe I lack information.

I personally can't stand Metallica (some of their songs are okay in my mind, many are just crap - but that's me).  But I'd agree with you there Garoth, the issue about them selling out is more how against it they were, and then how wholeheartedly they embraced the sellout nature later on.  I wouldn't say they sold out any more than most other mainstream artists.

I hold a special place in my heart for Lars and his drive to shut down Napster (and by proxy all peer-to-peer sharing services), not because I condone music piracy but more because I can honestly say that 90% of the 1500+ CDs I own, I would not have bought if I had not heard the music somewhere before.  And with commercial radio sucking more than an Electrolux in deep space (I know, I know, just let me have my moment) I don't listen to it anymore.  The 1-2 times a month I might turn on the radio, I may hear one or two songs before every station programmed into the 12 slots in the radio's memory are all playing commercials, and I turn it off and sing to myself instead.  Have I missed out on some new artists and decent music because of this?  Probably, but with the [mafi]AA's tactics of late, I don't think I care much.  I'll keep going to the Yes & Rush concerts as they come around, I'll see the Moody Blues when they're near, I'll buy the t-shirts and listen to the albums I already own.

I guess it's all in personal tastes. I like the old Metallica, like before they kicked Dave Mustaine. As for selling out, yeah all bands do eventually sell out or burn out. Iron Maiden has a few good songs, and Skynyrd is always good, (even though he over did it on Free Bird). And of course, who can forget Dimebag and Pantera.

Roc:

Time to get Satellite Radio. I don't know if it's popular in the USA, but a lot of people around Toronto have it. In addition to having no ads, they also have stations devoted to a specific genre, say Classic Rock. Or stand up comedy.

Having said that, I don't really want to pay for radio... and it's not like I have a car.

And that's exactly why I won't bother with satellite radio.  Now that I don't live an hour from work (closer to 20 minutes away), it's really not worth it to pay not to hear commercials for what.. a little over three hours per week of listening?  If my wife is in the car with me, sometimes I'll play the iPod, other times we chat, depending on our mood (and how tired she is).  And anymore if I'm in the truck and not listening to music for a long period of time, I'm probably chatting with someone else on the 2m amateur radio band.  No music there, but no commercials either :>

Ingredients:

Add a pinch of cleverness, and your care will cache internet radio when its parked in front of your house, for easy listening later.
